Handcuffs

Handcuffs are restraining devices that are designed to secure an individual's wrists or ankles close together.  A chain or hinge linked together comprises the two halves of the hand cuff.  Each half has a rotating part which engages with a ratchet which is closed around a person's wrist or ankles. When hand cuffed a person cannot move their wrists more than a few inches apart, making many tasks difficult or impossible.  Hand cuffs are typically used by police officers and bounty hunters to restrain and subdue their prisoners.  When handcuffs are applied to a suspect they are usually placed so that the suspects hands face outward with the keyholes facing up (away from the hands) to make it difficult to open them even with a key or improvised pick.
